The second assignment in Design Layout required us to design a short anthology of work by twenty contemporary American poets — all women, representing diverse subjects, styles, ages, and backgrounds. Although they have different levels of notoriety, all have appeared in Poetry, a Poetry Foundation magazine.
Our finished layouts included an introduction, the poems themselves, biographical notes and photos for each writer. I also created a title for the collection and cover page that tied my design choices together.
After trying different titles and treatments for the cover, I selected See, Meet, Know as the title for this anthology.
I wanted the audience to become acquainted with the authors on a more meaningful level with each page turn, so I leveraged an accordion-style fold for each page. In alignment with the title, the reader is met with photos of the two poets featured on each spread. Upon seeing what they look like, the reader gets a chance to meet them through their biographies. The final flip of the page features the poem, providing a deeper lens for readers to understand each artist.
