To gain further familiarity with the Adobe Suite and explore color theory, this Graphic Design II project asked that we redesign an ebook cover of our choosing using a duotone motif. Our final submissions needed to include an original cover for our selected book, an author bio, an overview, and the first page of the book. An additional challenge was to come up with a second cover for an imagined sequel or another book by that author. While it was supposed to feel like part of the book’s family stylistically, it was not intended to be an exact copy.
Upon reading the requirements, I immediately knew I wanted to use The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls’ first memoir. It also happens to be my favorite book. I opted for contrasting colors, golden pale orange and sacramento green, to reinforce themes in the book. The juxtaposition between the two parallels the vibrant warmth she felt from her family as a child and the cool reality of their nomadic, dysfunctional existence.
